Whey and health

Whey, once considered a useless by-product of dairy processing, is now being recognized for its numerous health benefits.

The importance of protein for optimal health cannot be overstated. A human body requires 20 amino acids to facilitate the production of protein for repair of  cells and tissues of the body. Researchers have found eight of the 20 amino acids must be obtained from our food. These are called essential amino acids. The richest sources of amino acids include fermented soy and whey.

The word Protein comes from the Greek word Protos or Proteose depending on who you read and it means "to come first". It has been recognized from early times to be absolutely essential for life. Protein (made from combinations of 22 known amino acids) makes up our DNA, hormones, enzymes, muscles - including skeletal, heart, smooth muscle which surrounds our arteries, immune cells, liver, kidneys, glands etc. etc. etc. Some of the amino acids 8 or 9 are considered essential which means we must consume them so we can make the other 13 or 14 amino acids and thus create proteins.

The Biological Value, or BV, of a protein is an indicator of the quality of the protein. It is a measure of a protein's ability to be used by the body (or its bioavailability). It is a percentage (though the scale is skewed resulting in some BV's of greater than 100) of the absorbed protein that a body actually uses. Biological Values are indicators of which proteins are best at aiding nitrogen retention in muscles to help them maintain or grow in mass.

Numerous sites on the internet relative to Sports Nutrition can be found where the attributes of "whey" are defined. One source for this article was  "Optimal Nutrition" by L. Lee Coyne, Ph.D.

The following quote is from Frank McLaughlin's page "Tips"

"Looking for youngsters to grow like weeds with the most amazing feather and muscle.  A few times per week feed your breeders grain coated with flaxseed oil and mixed with Whey Protein.  Whey Protein is the purest form of protein and comes from yogurt and cheese production.  For years the manufacturers tossed it out.  Now it is the craze in the athletic world for high performance.  I am in the human nutrition business and all my clients use whey for the essential amino acids."

Whey is one more supplement that can be added to feed grains by adding a consumable oil. 2 normal tablespoons  of oil to 1 kilo (2.20lbs) of grain. Mixing the oil with the grain first by shaking or stirring. Then adding one heaping tablespoon of whey and mix again. Feeding it to the the birds when they are in the growth and training stages will add to strength and endurance. Like any good thing it can be over done. Given to the the birds to often can cause them to molt faster than normal.

When purchasing the Whey it should be micro filtered. The microflitration process involves filtering the molecules through a membrane which does not allow the larger molecules (fats and lactos) to pass through, Be sure to read the lable of the brand you purchase to insure it is a microflitered product.

Sources: Many suppliers can be found on the internet. I have to suggest the best has to be your local health store. Deal with a community neighbor. Some that you can purchase from the net are more filler than product. At you local health store you know you dealing with someone who is a member of your own community.

There is an old saying I beleive in. "A poor man can never afford to by cheap" Trying to  save a buck or two just might give you ten dollars or more of less value.
