HOPPER FEEDING

The rational for hopper feeding is that pigeons know what is good for them, and we should try to accommodate their cravings. They have different demands on the feeding, depending on circumstances. One way to accommodate that demand is by allowing them select the grains their natural instincts tell them they need. Many very successful fanciers were hopper feeders. I've been told the Janseen Brothers hopper feed.

I am working on a design of a wall mounted hopper that I will use this (2003) season. When the design is completed and the unit built pictures will be added to this site.

The hoppers shown were built by Larry Davis a Michigan flyer. The comments are a copy and paste from the email with which the pictures were attached.

"I built these so that I could be away for up to a few days during the warm part of the year by using these and adding Clorox to the water in 1 gal to 2.5 gal plastic fountains. I also use these quite bit in the fall and winter. After the first couple of days you will find the birds will always have some grain in the crop but never over eat. I've only noticed about 2 to 3 percent are ever heavier than ideal weight even after 2 months free choice feeding.  The grains I have found are best for this system is, going from the largest section to the smallest is, Dent corn, Safflower, Canadian peas, Milo or Kafir, and Wheat. The rest of the year other than breeding season they never seem to scatter any grain and only take what they need."
