GSE
Grapefruit Seed Extract

GSE is an extremely potent and effective broad-spectrum bactericide, fungicide, antiviral and antiparasitic compound., is environmentally safe with a low toxicity to man and animals. It is becoming the disinfectant and sanitizing agent of choice for many hospitals and clinics throughout the United States. It is reported that, ten to fifteen drops per gallon is effective in killing Staph, Strep, Aspergillus, Salmonella and many other pathogenic organisms which are present in hospital carpets. The same 10 to 15 drops per gallon of water is effective when applied from a spray bottle in the loft.

GSE does not produce the negative side-effects associated with antibiotic use. Intestinal flora remain intact with the use of GSE. Chemical measures(like chlorox, and other disinfectants) add stress to the constitution, in some cases resulting in increased exposure to re-infection.

Test also indicate it is effective against many repertory and other infections. 9 drops per gallon of water has been given once a week to my birds as a preventative measure.

Dr Louis Parish, M.D., as investigator for the Dept. of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service, Food and Drug Administration, reported that (grapefruit seed extract) "...is as effective as any other amoebicide now available, perhaps more effective..." and, "It does not cause side effects." Nearly 200 patients were treated for Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia by Dr Parish and his associates over a two month period. Dr. Parish went on to say, "...it (GSE) gives symptomatic relief more than any other treatment."

Entamoeba histolytica is a single-celled parasite that is transmitted via contaminated water and food. It can also infect the liver and other organs.

Giardia lamblia (commonly referred to as Giardia) When ingested, Giardia can cause a gastrointestinal disease called giardiasis, often referred to as "Beaver Fever." Giardiasis is a frequent cause of diarrhea. Symptoms may include diarrhea, fatigue, and cramps. Waterborne giardiasis may occur as a result of disinfection problems or inadequate filtration procedures. Giardia cysts can infect humans and other animals.

WARNING
Do not use GSE while giving the birds medications. There is a phenomenon known as the "grapefruit juice effect". Two components found in grapefruit juice, naringin and naringenin**, inhibit production of an enzyme in the intestinal tract, thus increasing the rate of absorption for certain classes of drugs (including some antihistamines, birth control pills, anti-epilepsy medications and some antibiotics. It is not known if the same is true for medications formulated for birds.
