A question was asked in a discussion group if anyone had a design for a grains mixer. My grains come ready mixed but I often add supplements with oils. The little mixer I use is called "OdJob" and manufactured by Scepter Manufacturing of Scargorough, Ontario. For more information Click on the product  label below to go to the companies site. When at the site click the "Home & Garden" button.

After filling the barrel it's simply rolled across the floor to mix the grains.

The following is a sketch of one that can be built. The idea came from a post by Dr. Larry Lucas who has something similar. I haven't been built one. Its estimated that it will handle about fifty pounds.

These pictures were sent by Larry Davis a Michigan flyer. Similar to the above mixer with some great details on the construction

It is 24" in dia. and 36" long, there are 8 paddles" (1 X 4). The section ,between paddles opposite the door is covered with flashing so as not to wear from feed scoop use. The entire drum is covered then with aluminum window screen then all covered again with 1/4 inch hardware cloth for support (backing). On the outside of the hardware cloth each of the paddles has a 3/4" square strip of wood screwed to it. These hold the screen in place and act as handholds for turning the drum. About 3 to 4 revolutions about completely mixes 50 lb. at a time.

For larger requirements a motorized cement mixer will do a great job. This was a suggestion from the same discussion by Steve and Linda Joneli of Washington, State.

If you have another method that you find works well for you please leave a note in the guest book.
