This nest bowl is designed for those who live with cold winters and
want to start breeding as early as possible. Here in Quebec we can have
very cold weather January, February and at times early March. This nest
bowl is one way to help the birds keep the eggs and youngsters cozy during
extreme cold.

For the 2003 breeding season a "Light System" will be used. The birds
will be paired first week of December. Hopefully the first young will hatch
early January and be ready for banding middle January.

As an extra measure of insulation the paper nest bowl is turned upside
down, filled with sawdust then plywood bottom and double bubble insulation
is placed over it then turned right side up. A single 1/2" staple set in
the center of the paper bowl to keep it attached.
Double Bubble. is manufactured by several companies and can
be found at most building material stores. It is both an insulation and
a heat reflector. 3/8" has an R value of 7 and can reflect up to 97% of
heat back to it's source. When the birds are nesting their body heat is
reflected to the eggs. While the youngsters are growing their own body
heat is reflected to help keep them warm.
